Running Head: Eating Disorder Bulimia Nervosa and Its Causes Glemerlin Garcia Mercy College Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by weight loss behaviors driven by self-evaluations that are dependent on body weight and shape concerns (Dryer, Tyson, Kiernan, 2013). There is a false myth that this disorder is a life choice but it is a serious illness that could cause damage to a person’s eating habits. This disorder became noticeable a few years ago with all the new technologies but it was always around. Back in time many people died from this and they didn’t have enough resources to really know what it was and what was causing it. Meaning that knowing could give an advantage, allowing us to notice if something is wrong. For the sake of research empirical studies were review as well as journal articles for this specific topic. In a research article by (Mond et al., 2004) the study was based on women’s belief concerning causes and risk factors of bulimia. The researches conducted a two-phase epidemiological (medicine that deals with health problems) survey. For the first phase they used a sample of 802 women aged 18-45, with a questionnaire that included screening for eating disorders as well as general psychological distress, impairment, weight and height. In the second phase they were read a serious of problems related to disorder eating, where only 308 women participated. The first question was to indicate whether a series of possible causes was ‘very likely’, ‘likely’, or ‘not likely’ to be a factor(cause) developing in anybody. The option included childhood problems, nervous disposition, etc. Also they were asked to pick that one they believed to be the most likely to be a cause of a problem developing in anyone. The next question was to indicate if a serie s of risk factors was ‘more likely’, ‘equally likely’, and ‘less likely’.
